Net-Zero Soil Strategy for University Construction Support

This year, our team supported construction at a 23,290-square-foot university project site through a targeted environmental investigation. The goal was twofold: protect workers during construction and confirm compliance with environmental health and safety (EH&S) requirements. To meet these objectives, we designed a strategic sampling program tailored to the site’s risk management plan, budget, and access limits. Field activities included targeted soil sampling and adaptive screening with real-time measurements. This approach allowed us to collect high-quality data quickly and adjust methods as conditions changed, all while staying in full compliance with EH&S regulations.

Collaboration was central to the project. By working closely with stakeholders, we aligned fieldwork with the construction schedule and minimized disruption to campus operations. Our team delivered results in time to guide critical decisions, helping the project move forward without delay. Reporting was concise and action-driven, identifying potential exceedances, outlining compliance strategies, and supporting the next steps required to keep the project on track.

The investigation confirmed that soil contaminants were below regulatory thresholds. This finding allowed soil to be reused onsite instead of being hauled away for disposal. By avoiding unnecessary transport and disposal, the project significantly reduced costs and improved efficiency. At the same time, the reuse strategy supported sustainable practices and minimized environmental impacts.

Overall, the project delivered measurable value, with an estimated $6.41 in savings for every dollar spent. Through focused investigation, efficient management, and strong collaboration, our team ensured worker protection, maintained compliance, and advanced the university’s sustainability goals. The outcome highlights how practical, well-planned environmental strategies can reduce risk, control costs, and support successful construction.
