Soil Vapor Extraction at Site Contaminated by Dry Cleaning Operations

Soil and Soil Gas investigation
soil vapor intrusion remediation

From 2020-2023 our team lead environmental investigations and remediation at a site impacted by historical dry cleaning and fueling operations. The project scope included soil, soil gas, and groundwater assessments, followed by the design and installation of a site-specific Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) system. Our role was to ensure the remediation aligned with state and local requirements while supporting the client’s long-term redevelopment and funding objectives.

The site presented significant challenges due to a chlorinated solvent plume and vapor intrusion concerns. To address these, we developed a strategic SVE system that achieved vapor treatment efficiencies between 91.55% and 99.74% and reduced in-field VOC mass by 77.7% in under a year. Adaptive management, including weekly operation and maintenance visits, ensured the system performed reliably and responded quickly to changing site conditions.

In addition to remediation system operation, we conducted follow-up indoor air investigations to evaluate vapor intrusion risks and inform occupancy planning. Clear, data-driven reporting summarized system performance, mass removal, and mitigation recommendations, giving the client and regulators confidence in the site’s ongoing progress toward risk reduction.

The results demonstrated both technical success and measurable return on investment. By achieving rapid mass removal and reducing liability, our remediation design increased property value by up to 20%, with ROI ranging from 100% to 300%. Beyond compliance, our proactive approach positioned the site for successful mixed-use redevelopment while securing continued state funding for ongoing mitigation.
