Vapor Intrusion Litigation Support –School District, Beverly Hills, California
Developed, implemented, and served as a technical expert for a field investigation strategy for a vapor intrusion issue that helped the client obtain a case dismissal prior to trial. The lawsuit was pushing for a much more expensive remediation program focusing on achieving residential cleanup standards and threatened the closure of the school. This project involved a series of negotiations to shift the focus towards data collection to determine if there was a problem. Extensive fast-track field investigations were within a week of negotiations. In addition, implemented a seasonal data collection approach that included a “preventive” vapor intrusion monitoring program – including quarterly indoor air sample collection to help with public participation and increase support for the school.
Remediation Design – Chemical Manufacturing Facility, California
The project was conducted in a politically charged environment. The initial goal was to assess impacts to the overall budget from the remediation phase of the project. A feasibility study was conducted to help the client establish short- and long-term goals. Demonstrated the stability of a VOC plume in groundwater to the federal agency and utilized innovative tools such as depleted isotope studies and a signature ratio as a tracer to define the plume’s boundary. Obtained data to develop and implement a limited and focused groundwater monitoring, limited soil gas investigation, institutional controls – HVAC systems and passive venting sub slab depressurization systems and best management practices for stormwater discharges.
Site Investigation and Remediation - Aerospace Manufacture / CA
Negotiated with various local regulatory agencies (DTSC, SCAQMD) to help the client tailor the site investigation and remedial action plans for soil (perchlorate, volatile organic compounds [VOCs], pesticides, metals, and depleted uranium contamination), soil gas (VOCs and total petroleum hydrocarbons [TPH]), and groundwater contamination (VOCs, metals, perchlorate, etc). The focused approach provided cost-effective long term operation and maintenance (O&M) plans and in-place closure for selective operable units within the site. The facility is currently in an O&M phase, which has allowed the client to now pursue a property transaction and redevelopment purchase agreement.
Soil Gas Investigation – Nationwide Retailer, Huntington Beach, California
Designed and supervised a soil gas investigation at the Bella Terra Shopping Mall in Huntington Beach. The objective of the investigation was to determine the extent of methane and volatile organic compounds contamination in shallow soil gas. Data obtained from the soil gas investigation was used to determine human health risk exposures to the occupants at the site and adjoining properties to be used during the construction for future development at the site.
Green House Gas Study – Nationwide Grocery Store, Lakewood, California
In accordance with March 18, 2010 amendment to the California Environmental Quality Act, completed a Green House Gas Emission Inventory study for a proposed WinCo Foods store in Lakewood California. The Green House Gas study was completed using general methodologies published by the 2006 United Environmental Protection Agency Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change guidelines and by The Climate Registry.
Groundwater Quality Studies - Recycling Facility, San Leandro, California
Designed and supervised a limited site investigation to determine the extent of soil and groundwater contamination related to lead dust near an active railroad facility. Data obtained was used to develop a remedial action plan for offsite disposal of onsite lead soil contamination as California hazardous and Resource Conversation and Recovery Act non-hazardous waste.
